Google confirms that the September 2022 product review update, the fifth in a series aimed at low-quality reviews, is now live.

The update went live on September 20 and will take up to a week to complete.

Google announced the change on Twitter, linking to the official page for search ranking updates. Once the launch is complete, Google will update the page.

This announcement is a little later than anticipated. Google informed publishers in August that a product review update would be available later that month.

The helpful content update was released in August, with no mention of the product review update. The update is now available, as promised.

These updates typically take two weeks to complete. Google, on the other hand, claims that the September 2022 product review update is “mostly done.”

“For awareness, the September 2022 core update has not fully completed but it’s mostly done. We expect it will be fully complete within a week and will share on our updates page when it is done.”

Because the update is nearly complete, you may already notice a difference on your product review pages.

In this regard, Google adds:

“If you see a change and wonder if it’s related to the core update or the product reviews update:

  • If you produce product reviews, then it’s probably related to that.
  • If not, then it might be related to the core update.”

This update does not apply to you if you do not publish product reviews on your website. It is not a major update that will affect all search results.

There’s also the aforementioned helpful content update to consider, in addition to last week’s core update and this week’s product review update.

Google revealed earlier this month that the ranking signal introduced with the helpful content update will most likely become stronger as other types of updates are rolled out.

This means that the current version of the product review update has the potential to have a greater impact than previous versions.

It’s also possible that product review pages that haven’t been affected by previous updates will be affected by this one.

That doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Every algorithm update has the potential to improve ranking.

This update is applicable to websites that publish long-form product reviews, such as Wirecutter and Tom’s Guide.

This update still does not apply to you if you sell products that customers can review on your website. Customer reviews and product review articles are not the same thing.
